Bag Book Report

The purpose of the Bag Book Report is to interest a classmate to read your book. The inside of your bag should include items that you will use to explain important ideas or concepts discussed in your book.

Genre:

Any non-fiction book that is a comfortable reading level for you. You will need to get the approval of Miss Conley first.

Due Date:

December 8, 2011

MATERIAL SUGGESTIONS:

You will need a clean brown paper or paper gift bag (any size). You may cover the bag with paper. You will also need colored pencils, colored markers, crayons, scotch tape, glue stick, and/or paper. You may use any other supplies that you would like to use.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:

1. Choose and read a non-fiction book that is a comfortable reading level for you. You will need to have your book approved by Miss Conley.

2. On the front of the bag neatly write:

Your name

Title of the book

Author of the book

Draw a picture that relates to your book

3. On the back of the bag, attach a typed or a neatly written paper with 8-10 questions and answers that relates to the book.

4. On one side panel of the bag, attach a typed or a neatly written paper with 8-10 unfamiliar words or challenge words and their definitions.

5. On the other side panel of bag, attach a typed or a neatly written paper with your opinion of the book. Did you like it? If you did like it, tell three reasons why. If you did not like it, tell three reasons why you didn’t. You can also describe who might enjoy reading the book.

6. Collect 5-7 things (that will fit into your bag) to help you tell the class about your book when you present your report in class. Include why or how each item relates to your book.

7. Present the Bag Book Report to the class.

DURING THE ORAL PRESENTAITON YOU WILL:

· Explain what you have learned about your topic.

· Explain why you selected the objects in the bag and why they connect to the book.

HERE IS YOUR SCHEDULE FOR THEBAG BOOK REPORT:

Week 1—Select a book. Have it approved. Begin reading and review what needs to be in the book report.

Week 2-Week 3— Finish reading your book. Begin making sketches for the bag. Start thinking about the questions and vocabulary words that you would like to include. Think about the things you will put in your bag.

Week 4— Write a rough draft of your questions, vocabulary words, and opinion of the book. Find the right size paper bag for your project. Have Miss Conley or a parent review your rough draft. Use complete sentences and correct any spelling errors. Attach your final copy of the written parts to the bag, and draw the illustrations on the bag.

Remember to be creative and have fun!

It has been a wonderful experience meeting with all the parents during the Parent-Teacher conferences. Please feel free to e-mail me or contact me, if you ever have any questions or concerns.

In Religion, we are learning about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are also learning the Our Father in Spanish.

In Math, we just finished our chapter with multiplying up to 1,000s. Our new chapter will focus on algebra. We will learn about solving problems with variables. Remember to continue to practice the math facts!

In English, we are doing a lot of different writing assignments in class. We are writing a business plan and making a flyer for it in Computers class.

In Religion, this month we are learning the Ave Maria (Hail Mary). We are also taking a closer look at the 10 commandments to fully understand each of the commandments. We are finishing up our 3 R's Poster, which is ways on how to promote Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse in the school community. We are also starting a project of a web to show the different people in our lives that have influence us.

In Math, we are learning and reviewing multiplication and division. We are learning about patterns, the relationship of multiplication and division, and tricks to help us remember our multiplication facts.

In Reading/Language Arts, we are wrapping up our first theme in the series. We are reading a myth called "Daedalus and Icarus". This weeks, we are reviewing grammar like pronouns, the different types of sentences, possessive nouns, and proper nouns. In writing, We are continuing to write our own Halloween Stories.

In Social Studies, we are wrapping up Unit 1. We will be having a test this Thursday. Our next unit will be discussing Early California with the focus of Native Americans and Explorers.

Remember the Cereal Box Book Reports are due 10/25/2011.

Your will you need to read a book and design a brand new type of cereal that goes along with your book. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Choose a book that goes along with the Halloween theme.

2. Get the book approved by Miss Conley.

3. Read the book.

4. Decorate and design the cereal box using the guidelines mentioned below.

5. Present the cereal box to the class as a commercial.

Below are the directions for designing and decorating your box:

· Bring in any extra empty cereal boxes to class to share with any classmates who do not have one.

· Cover all the sides of your box with construction paper or wrapping paper. Miss Conley will give you some construction paper, if you need it.

· On the front of the box, you will need to create the name of a brand new type of cereal that represents your book. (For example: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone could be called “Wizard Wands”). Make your cereal box look appealing and fun. You might even want to draw characters or other pictures to help sell the product. Look at actual cereal boxes for ideas.

· On the back of the box, you will need to think of a game that is based on the story. It can be a puzzle, a word game, or any other fun activity that might be found on the back of a cereal box. The activity should include information from the book. It should also have directions for how to play or what to do. Include the answers on the bottom of the box. (For example: Help Harry get to the Stone would be a maze that takes him through different things that happened in the story.)

· On the right side of the box, type or write the “Ingredients”. Write a detailed description of the main characters and setting. Include a paragraph about your opinion of the book.

· On the left side of the box, type or write a detailed summary of the book.

· On the Top of the box, write the title, author of the book, and your name.

· Here is a tip: FIRST CUT THE PIECES OF CONSTRUCTION PAPER TO FIT YOUR BOX. ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED DESIGNING, WRITING, AND COLORING THE PAPER SHOULD YOU GLUE IT ONTO THE BOX.

· Have fun and be as creative as you can!

The students just have to bring in a copy of a weather report so they can use it as a reference guide when they write their scripts for the "Weather Reports". If they get it from the TV, they have to write down what the Weather Person says about the weather.

This week, we are taking the IOWA tests. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep, eats breakfast, and brings a snack to school everyday this week.

Remember our first book report is due this Thursday. Make sure that your child adds lots of details with plot, characters and setting.

In Math, they are reviewing how to add and subtract numbers in the thousands. The students are also reviewing how to estimate and subtract with zeros. Remember to have your child practice the math facts on a daily basis.

In Religion, the students are learning the Memorare Prayer. They will be tested on the prayer written and orally next week. They are also discussing how to take care of the environment with a focus on the three R's (Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse).

In Language Arts, the class is reviewing verbs and pronouns. The students are also writing paragraphs about themselves and learning about the writing process.

In Social Studies, the students are learning about weather and climate in California. They will be doing "Weather Reports" in Computer class, where they are going to write reports about the weather in the different areas of California like a Weather Person in the News. The students will record each other and they will watch their "Weather Reports" in class.

Valentine's Party

It is time to get ready for Valentine's Day. Thee are 32 students in our class. If your child would like to hand out Valentines, she/he will need to give one to every child in the class. A class list is attached to this letter in order your child to address his/her Valentines. Have your child bring the Valentines to school on February 14th. Steps to Complete the Project :
1. Read an age appropriate biography book or find information on the internet about an African American in honor of Black History Month. If you have any questions about a book/person please ask me.
2. You may use additional resources like other books, encyclopedias, or the internet.
3. You may take notes to help you remember information about your person’s life.
4. Fill out the questionnaire about your person.
5. Take your answers from the questionnaire and write a report about your person.
6. Write a rough draft of your report.
7. Get it checked by Miss Conley.
8. Write or type a final draft of your person.
Report Requirements
· Include a cover page with your name, name of your person, and a picture of your person.
· 1st paragraph include information about your person’s life.

4. You must recreate an important scene from the book.

5. Write or type a detailed description of the setting and the main characters on one side of the box.

6. Write or type why the scene was important to the book and your opinion of the book on the other side of box.

7. Write or type the summary of the book on the back of the box.

8. Write or type your name, the title, and author of the book on top of the box.

Notes from Miss Conley:

*I can't believe how fast this school year is going by. Last week, was the start of the 2nd Quarter. I have had the pleasure of meeting with parents during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

I hope that this has been useful to discuss your child's strengths and weaknesses because it has been helpful for me.

*I would like to thank the parents who have helped with field trip to the Garden for the Environment. It was a fun field trip. The students learned about composting and the different types of plants that they could eat in the garden. The favorite food that the class tasted was the strawberries. The class was able to bring back a souvenir from the field trip. You should ask your child about the new class pets in the science lab.

* I would like to thank all the parents who helped and donated items for the Halloween Party. If you would like to help with the Thanksgiving party, please let me know so we can start planning the party. Thank you in advance for helping.

Highlights from the Classroom:

* In Math, the students have been practicing the multiplication and division. Please make sure that your child is practicing the basic math facts. The class have been studying basic multiplication facts and division facts over the last couple of weeks. As a class, we have discussed the "tricks" of solving the multiples of 0-12. This will help them in the coming weeks when they learn about two-digit multiplication and long division.

*In Social Studies, the students are learning about Early Californians with focusing on Native Americans. There are some exciting art projects and projects that will help reinforce the ideas discussed in the book. Along with that, they have been learning how to take notes by taking information from the book and putting it into an outline format.

*In English, the students have been learning about the different types of sentences. They have been practicing with compound sentences, simple sentences, and complex sentences. the students have also been reviewing the different types of punctuation. There will be a test coming up soon to test the students on these skills.

*In Reading, the class has started the second theme in our reading series, which is "Money and Sense". The stories in this theme all have to do with money or businesses, which the children enjoy talking about. The first story was "Starting a Business" and the students learned how to create their own business. Every student has come up with his or her own business that they would like to create. Then in computers, they will make a poster advertising the business that the students have created.

*In Religion, they have been learning the Apostle's Creed. The test will be coming up soon! The students also been learning about relationships by focusing on the relationship with God. The class has discussed the different ways of making the relationship that they have with God stronger. The class will learn more about the Ten Commandments.
